Accrington Stanley History

The original Accrington Stanley team was formed in 1891 and played in the Football League from 1920 to 1962. However, it then collapsed in 1966 and re-formed two years later in 1968. Stanley play their home matches at Crown Ground – a stadium which holds just over 5,400 fans – and has been since they were re-founded in 1968. The club’s most recent success came in the 2017/18 campaign where they were crowned champions of League Two.

Back in 2003, Accrington won the Northern Premier League and was promoted to the Conference for the first time in their history. The club then became a full-time professional outfit the following season and in the 2005/06 campaign, Stanley returned to the Football League after a 19-game unbeaten run helped them secure promotion to League Two.

In their first season back, Accrington won their first-ever League Cup match, beating former European Cup winners Nottingham Forest 1-0. As for accolades, the club have never reached an FA or League Cup final, but their promotion to League One back in 2018 was a memorable day in their history.

Soccer AM always incorporate the humorous phrase ‘Accrington Stanley, who are they? Exactly!’ on their live TV show, and this phrase came from a 1980s advert which made reference to Stanley’s obscurity in comparison to Liverpool’s success at the time.
