AFC BOURNEMOUTH HISTORY

Nicknamed ‘The Cherries’, the club was founded back in 1899 under the name Boscombe FC. In 1923, it was renamed as Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic FC, which was the name until 1972, when it become AFC Bournemouth as we know it today. As a club, Bournemouth have spent large portions of their history bouncing between the third and fourth tiers of English football. However, the introduction of Eddie Howe as permanent manager in 2012 has seen the club rise to the top-flight; and have remained there since promotion back in 2015.

Prior to that, though, the Cherries do not have a great deal of silverware to their name. In Howe’s first season as manager, he achieved promotion from League One to the Championship; runners-up in the division was enough for an automatic promotion spot. The club then spent one season in the Championship before winning the league and bouncing into the Premier League. For a small-sized club on the south-coast, this was some achievement.

Bournemouth do have a few trophies to their name, but nothing compared to most top-flight English clubs. Overall, their honours include winning the second and third tiers of English football once, the Football League Trophy once and the Football League Third Division South Cup.
