AFC Wimbledon History

Founded just 17 years ago back in 2002, AFC Wimbledon was constructed by supporters of their former club – Wimbledon FC who were established in 1889 – and currently play their home matches at Kingsmeadow which has a capacity of just under 5,000. Nicknamed ‘The Dons’ or ‘The Wombles’, the club have risen from the ninth tier of English football (Combined Counties Premier) to the third tier (League One). Wimbledon also currently hold the record for the longest unbeaten run of league matches in English senior football, playing 78 consecutive games without defeat between February 2003 and December 2004.

The Dons have been promoted six times in 13 seasons, and their most notable achievement to date is winning the League Two play-off final in 2016, beating Plymouth Argyle 2-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Barry Fuller currently tops the Football League appearances charts, playing 227 times for Wimbledon from 2013 to 2018. Prior to the club’s promotion to the Football League, though, Sam Hatton was their record appearance holder, featuring 189 times for the Dons. As for the club’s top goalscorer in the Football League, that award goes to Luke Taylor, netting 52 times in 147 appearances. As for their non-league status, Kevin Cooper tops the goalscoring charts, scoring 104 times for the club between 2002 and 2004.
