Founded over 133 years ago, Barnsley’s colours were originally blue, but were converted to red and white in 1904 and it has not changed since. The club are known as ‘the Tykes’ and play their home matches at Oakwell Stadium.
Although it dates all the way back to the 1911/12 season, Barnsley have an FA Cup triumph to their name, beating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 after extra time at Bramall Lane. Since then, the club have failed to reach the final of either the FA or League Cup, but they have had success in other domestic competitions.
They have been crowned champions of the third division of English football three times and have won the League One play-off final twice. The club also managed to lift the Football League Trophy in the 2015/16 season, and then things changed.
In December 2017, it was announced that Patrick Cryne and family had agreed to sell a majority stake in the club to a consortium involving many different people, including baseball legend Billy Beane. The new consortium now holds 80% of the shares, while Cryne family holds 20%.
Barnsley’s largest league victory came all the way back in 1899, beating Loughborough Town 9-0 in the Second Division. Barry Murphy – who played for the club for 16 years between 1962 and 1978 – currently holds the record for most league appearances (514), while Ernie Hine sits at the top of the all-time goalscorers list, netting 131 times for the Tykes.
