Birmingham City History

Originally founded in 1875, the club was called Small Health Alliance, which was renamed Small Health in 1888, Birmingham in 1905 and eventually Birmingham City in 1943. When it comes to honours, Birmingham has a long-standing history. Their most successful period as a club came between the 1950s and early 1960s; achieving their highest finishing position of sixth in the First Division in the 1955/56 campaign and reached the 1956 FA Cup Final. They also reached the final of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup on two occasions – 1960 and 1961 – and became the first English club side to reach a major European final.

In 1963, the Blues won the League Cup for the first time in their history, beating their fierce rivals Aston Villa 4-0. 58 years later and they made themselves two-time champions of the League Cup, defeating Arsenal 2-1 at Wembley in front of 88.851 fans. Ben Foster claimed the Man of the Match award and the team put on a tough display to secure the trophy.

The club have finished runners-up of the FA Cup on two occasions, while they have four Second Division championships to their name. Birmingham has also won the Third Division once.

Frank Womack holds the record for Birmingham league appearances, playing 491 times for the Blues between 1908 and 1928. As for the club’s record top goalscorer, that achievement goes to Joe Bradford, netting 267 times over 15 years.
