Bolton Wanderers History

Originally founded in 1874 as Christ Church Football Club, they adopted the name Bolton Wanderers just three years later and was a founder member of the Football League in 1888. Bolton played at Burnden Park for 102 years from 1895 before moving to the Reebok Stadium – which is now known as the University of Bolton Stadium – in 1997 and holds almost 29,000 fans. Since 2015, though, the club have been in severe financial difficulties and went into administration in May 2019. They were facing expulsion from the EFL before the club was acquired by new owners on August 28, 2019.

The Wanderers have won the FA Cup five times in their history, their most recent triumph back in 1958 when they beat Manchester United 2-0. Bolton, in front of over 127,000 supporters, beat West Ham United 2-0 in 1923 in their first ever Wembley FA Cup Final. They have finished runners-up of the League Cup twice. Bolton did feature in Europe recently, though, reaching the last 32 of the UEFA Cup in 2005/06 and the last 16 in 2007/08.

An interesting part of history was having nets hung on goal posts, and this system was first used in a league match between Bolton and Nottingham Forest.
