Nicknamed ‘The Clarets’, Burnley were founded in 1882; 137 years later and they are playing in the top-flight of English football. Turf Moor has been their home since 1883, seating over 21,900 spectators – and don’t forget, all the latest Burnley news can be found here in just a few, easy clicks.
Up until the 1885/86 campaign, Burnley originally played friendly matches until they entered the FA Cup that season. The club’s emblem has the Latin motto ‘Pretiumque et Causa Labrois’, translating to ‘The Prize and the Cause of [our] Labour’.
When you take a look at the historic achievements the Clarets have achieved, they have done pretty well. Burnley have been champions of England twice – in 1920/21 and 1959/60 – while also being the FA Cup winners of the 1914 trophy. Alongside that, the club has two Community Shields to their name.
Throughout the 1920/21 campaign where Burnley were crowned champions of England for the first time, the ream embarked on a 30-match unbeaten run, which remained a historic record until Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ season in 2003/04. Their other First Division title also came in impressive fashion; the team mostly consisting of youth academy graduates and winning the league on the last day with victory over Manchester City.
However, the club came mighty close to being demoted from the Football League and possibly dissolved. A 2-1 victory against Leyton Orient in 1987 saved the club from relegation to the Conference and the club started to climb their way up the English ladder again; promotion to the third tier in 1991/92 and again in 1999/2000 placed them in the second tier, before they were promoted to the Premier League in 2008/09, 2013/14 and 2015/16.
