Cambridge United History

The club was originally founded in 1912 as Abbey United before changing its name to Cambridge United in 1951. Nicknamed ‘The U’s’, Cambridge were not elected to the Football League until 1970. Prior to that, the club battled in the Southern League, winning the Premier Division back-to-back from 1968 to 1970. After joining the Football League, Cambridge were promoted to the Third Division in 1973 but suffered immediate relegation.

A period of success followed; they once again gained promotion to the Third Division in 1977 before securing successive promotions and joining the Second Division the following year. Cambridge remained in the division for six seasons before suffering consecutive relegations back down to the Fourth Division.

In 2005, the club suffered relegation to the Conference and it took them nine years to climb back into the fourth tier of English football, beating Gateshead in the play-off final. Their best FA Cup runs date back to the 1989/90 and 1990/91 campaigns where they finished quarter-finalists in consecutive seasons. They also reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup in 1992/92 but have never lifted the trophy.
