Cardiff City History

The club was founded in 1899 as Riverside A.F.C before being renamed as Cardiff City in 1908, eventually joining the English Football League in 1920. Nicknamed ‘The Bluebirds’, they play their home matches at Cardiff City Stadium – holding over 33,000 fans – and has been since 2009. Prior to the stadium move, Cardiff played Ninian Park which opened in 1910. The Bluebirds remain the only team from outside England to have won the FA Cup, achieved back in 1927 after defeating Arsenal. They have also finished runners-up of the competition twice and got to the final of the League Cup in 2012, losing to Liverpool on penalties.

In their 121-year history, Cardiff have won the Welsh Cup 22 times, making them the second most successful team in the competition behind Wrexham. Long-standing rivalries with Swansea City and Bristol City has created some memorable moments over the years, with all three currently occupying the Championship.

The Bluebirds finished runners-up in the 1923/23 First Division campaign and have won the Championship, Third Division and Fourth Division once. They also lifted the FA Charity Shield back in 1927 following their success in the FA Cup the season prior.

Overall, Billy Hardy remains the club’s record appearance holder, playing 590 times in a 20-year spell with Cardiff. Len Davies is Cardiff’s all-time top goalscorer, netting 179 times for the club.
