Nicknamed ‘The Addicks’, the club was founded in 1905 when several youth clubs in south-east London combined to form Charlton Athletic. Charlton did not turn professional until 1920 and first entered the Football League in 1921. The club’s most successful period came in the 1930s, achieving their highest league finishes including runners-up of the First Division in 1937. Following the conclusion of World War II, the Addicks reached two consecutive FA Cup Finals, losing in 1946 and bouncing back to win the competition in 1947 – beating Burnley 1-0.
The club have been champions of the Second Division, League One and Third Division South. Charlton have never won a League Cup, but did win the Football League War Cup in 1944.
Sam Bartram is Charlton’s record appearance maker, playing 623 times between 1934 and 956. As for most goals, Derek Hales tops the charts, scoring 168 times for the Addicks. The club’s youngest ever scorer is Jonjo Shelvey – currently plying his trade at Newcastle United – at 16 years and 310 days old.
Charlton’s largest margin of victory in their history was achieved in 2018, beating Stevenage 8-0 away from home.
