Founded in 1937, Colchester spent 71 years at Layer Road before relocating to the Colchester Community Stadium in 2008, which has a capacity of 10,105. The U’s spent the first 40 years of their Football League venture between the Third and Fourth Division, and in that period came one of their fondest moments in history; a 3-2 triumph in the FA Cup fifth round over Leeds United in 1971. However, following a decline in the late 1980s, Colchester were relegated to the Conference in 1990.

Despite that setback, the club returned two years later after winning the Conference title in 1992. By the time 1998 came around they gained promotion to the Second Division after beating Torquay United 1-0 in the play-off final. In the 2006/07 campaign, Colchester achieved their best ever league finish in history, ending the season 10^th in the Championship, despite having the lowest attendance records in the division.

Micky Cook currently holds the record for most appearances, featuring 700 times in 15 years with the club. Tony Adcock remains the club’s all-time top goalscorer, netting 149 times for Colchester.
