Crawley Town History

Founded in 1896 as Crawley Football Club, they changed their name to Crawley Town in 1958. The club play their home matches at Broadfield Stadium, also known as People’s Pension Stadium – a ground which holds over 6,000 fans – and have done since 1997. Crawley helped found the West Sussex League before transferring to the Mid-Sussex League. However, the club disbanded in 1935 and were re-established three years later. In 1962, the Reds moved from amateur to semi-professional status and were accepted into the Southern League one year later.

The club was promoted out of the Southern League Southern in 1984 and spent the following 21 seasons in the Premier Division. Crawley then won promotion to the Conference in 2004. One year later and the club turned fully professional but faced immediate financial difficulties and entered administration the following year.

Fortunately, the club survived and appointed Steve Evans as manager in 2007, who guided Crawley to the Football League as champions of the 2010/11 Conference campaign. In 2010, the club embarked on a remarkable FA Cup run; beating Newport County, Guiseley, Swindon Town and Crawley before setting up a magical fifth round tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Despite losing 1-0 on the day, Crawley had 9,000 fans supporting the team and remains a memorable moment in the club’s history.
