The club was formed back in 1877 and named after Princess Alexandra. In 1889, they entered the Football Alliance league before becoming a founder member of the Football League Second Division in 1892. They are nicknamed ‘The Railwaymen’ because of the town’s links with the rail industry.
Crewe have played their home matches at The Alexandra Stadium since 1906 and holds over 10,000 spectators. After finishing bottom of the Second Division in 1895/96, the club failed to be re-elected into the Football League and did not join the Third Division North until 1921.
Overall, the club spent 20 years of its history struggling in the fourth tier and were forced to apply for re-election on seven occasions, but then their fortunes turned. In 1997, they won the Third Division play-off final to win a place in the second tier for the first time in 101 years. They then spent the following nine seasons in the Championship.
Crewe’s best FA Cup run dates back to the 1887/88 campaign where they reached the semi-finals. The club’s widest margin of victory in the league came against Rotherham United, beating them 8-0 in 1932. Tommy Lowry holds the record for most appearances, featuring 482 times for the club.
