Crystal Palace History

Although the club was founded in 1905, there is plentiful history before that. The origins can be traced back to 1854, when the famous Crystal Palace Exhibition building was relocated and rebuilt and eventually the area was renamed Crystal Palace. Nicknamed ‘The Eagles’, Palace moved into their current home, Selhurst Park, back in 1924 – seating 25,000 fans. Impressively, the club have only dropped below the second tier of English football once in their history – between 1974 and 1977 – and their highest ever league finish came in the 1990/91 First Division campaign as they finished third. However, at that period there was a partial UEFA ban on English clubs following the Heysel Stadium disaster, meaning Palace were denied a place in Europe.

When it comes to the FA Cup, Palace have featured in the final twice, losing to Manchester United on both occasion in 1990 and 2016. Despite that, they have been crowned champions of the second tier of English football twice, the third tier once and runners-up of the fourth tier.

Jim Cannon holds the record for Crystal Palace appearances, having played 660 times for the Eagles between 1973 and 1988. As for transfers, the highest transfer fee paid by the club to date was for Christian Benteke from Liverpool in the 2016 summer transfer window for a sum of £32 million.
