Derby County History

Founded in 1884 and nicknamed ‘The Rams’, Derby currently play in the Championship at Pride Park Stadium, the place they have called home since 1997. The club is one of only 10 clubs to have competed in every season of the English football league system and you can keep up to date with all the latest Derby County news right here – all it takes is a few, simple clicks.

The club’s most successful peak came in the 1970s, winning the First Division twice while competing in major European competitions on four different occasions, reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup. Domestically, the Rams have once won the FA Cup back in 1946, but have been unable to conquer the League Cup in their history.

When speaking about the history of Derby County, you cannot forget about the ‘Brian Clough era’. In 1967, Clough and Peter Taylor took over and led the club to their greatest success. Derby were promoted to the First Division in 1969 and three years later, they lifted the Football League Championship. Despite not retaining their title the following campaign, the Rams finished as semi-finalists in the European Cup, losing to Italian giants Juventus.

Clough was always an outspoken figure and comments against football’s establishment led to his falling out with the board of directors at the club, and Clough and Taylor left in 1973. However, 37 years later, the pair had a bronze statue placed outside Pride Park in commemoration of their outstanding legacy.
