Founded in 1879 and nicknamed ‘Donny’, Doncaster currently compete in the third tier of English football. The club did not turn professional until 1885 and have spent the majority of their history between the third and fourth tiers. They currently play their home matches at Keepmoat Stadium – holding over 15,000 fans – and remember, you can find all the recent Doncaster Rovers news and exclusive content here – all it takes is a few clicks.
Doncaster remain one of four clubs to win the fourth tier three times. Their first season in the Football League back in 1901 was actually their most successful to date, finishing seventh in the Second Division.
A remarkable moment in the club’s history came in 1946 against Stockport County in a Division Three (North) cup tie. With the score 2-2 after 90 minutes and no team scoring in extra time, they played out the longest ever competitive football match in history. The rule at that time was that the game would continue until there was another goal, but after 203 minutes, play was halted.
The club has won the Football League Trophy once, beating Bristol Rovers in the 2007 final. Doncaster have also been champions of League One once, while winning the fourth tier three times in their history.
