Founded in 1904, Exeter began their home matches at St James Park – a stadium with a capacity of 8,541 – and remain there to this day. In 1914, the club went on a tour of South America to raise awareness of football and in turn, became the first side to play a national team from Brazil. Since then, Exeter and Fluminense are now partner clubs. Six years after, the club was invited to help create the Football League Third Division and became founder members of the Fourth Division in 1958.
Exeter won their first league title in the 1989/90 campaign, gaining promotion as Fourth Division champions. However, they were relegated four years later and then lost their Football League status at the end of the 2002/03 season. In 2007, Exeter lost the Conference play-off final but recovered the following year to gain promotion back to the Football League.
The club has reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup twice in their history, dating back to the 1930/31 and 1980/81 seasons. Exeter’s largest league victory came against Coventry City, defeating them 8-1 in 1926.
