Forest Green Rovers History

Founded in 1889, the club became founder members of the Mid Gloucestershire League five years later. Up until 2006, Forest Green played their home matches at The Law Ground before moving to the New Lawn, a stadium that holds over 5,000 spectators. The club spent its early history in multiple leagues and won multiple titles, before they became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League in 1968 and moved up to the Premier Division of the Hellenic League seven years later. In 1981/82, they won the title and lifted the FA Vase after beating Rainworth Miners Welfare in the final at Wembley.

Following that success, Forest Green spent the next 13 years in the Southern League, briefly competing under the name Stroud FC before reverting to its original name, winning promotion into the Conference in 1998. In 1999, the club reached the FA Trophy final, losing on the day but became the first club to reach the final of both the FA Vase and FA Trophy.

In 2010, the club was transformed after investment from Dale Vince and they became the world’s first vegan club in 2015. The investment helped Forest Green compete for promotion into the Football League, which they achieved in the 2017 National League play-offs and have remained a League Two outfit since.
