Fulham FC History

Founded in 1879, Fulham are the oldest football club from London to play in the Football League. The club is nicknamed ‘The Cottagers’ and play at Craven Cottage – which has been their home ground since 1896 – holding over 25,000 spectators. In their history, Fulham have come close on two occasions to achieving excellent silverware. In 1975, they contested the FA Cup Final with West Ham, losing 2-0 on the day. 35 years later they found themselves in the final of the Europa League, but again fell short and suffered a 2-1 defeat in extra time.

1997 saw Mohamed Al-Fayed’s takeover and pledged the club would reach the Premier League within five years despite currently lying in the fourth tier of English football. And that is what they did; three promotions in five seasons guided the club into the Premier League, securing top-flight status for the first time since 1968.

Digging deeper, the Cottagers have won the Second Division and Third Division twice, also being crowned UEFA Intertoto Cup winners in 2002. Johnny Haynes currently lies top of the appearances chart, featuring 658 times for Fulham. Haynes also sits second on the all-time goalscorer chart – netting 158 – and is only bettered by Gordon Davies who scored 178 times for the club.
