Gillingham History

Founded in 1893, the club were originally named New Brompton before changing to Gillingham in 1912. The club joined the Football League in 1920 but were voted out of the league in 1938 and were replaced by Ipswich Town. However, they returned 12 years later after it was expanded from 88 to 92 clubs. In the late 1980s, the Gills twice came close to being promoted to the second tier of English football, but then followed a decline and in 1993, narrowly avoided relegation to the Conference.

Between 2000 and 2005 Gillingham were in the second tier for the only time in their history – achieving an eleventh-place finish in 2002/03. Prior to that in 1995, the club went into administration and faced being expelled from the Football League and closed down. However, five months later Paul Scally stepped in and bought the club.

Roy Hillyard holds the record for Gillingham appearances, featuring 657 times between 1974 and 1990. Brian Yeo remains the club’s all-time leading league goalscorer, netting 136 times between 1963 and 1975.
