Grimsby Town History

Nicknamed ‘The Mariners’, the club was founded as Grimsby Pelham in 1878, before changing its name to Grimsby Town one year later. They currently play their home matches at Blundell Park – an all-seater stadium with a capacity of over 9,000 – and have done since 1898. The club are the most successful of the three professional league outfits in Lincolnshire, being the only one to play top flight English football in their history. Grimsby have reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup on two occasions, the only club of the three to do so.

To date, Alan Buckley remains their most successful manager; three spells between 1988 and 2008 guided the club to three promotions and two Wembley appearances during the 1997/98 campaign, winning both the Football League Trophy and the Football League Second Division play-off final.

In 2010, Grimsby’s relegation made them the fourth club to compete in all top five divisions of English football, returning to the Football League six years later after beating Forest Green Rovers in the 2016 Conference play-off final. John McDermott holds the record for most appearances, featuring 754 times between 1987 and 2007, while their all-time top goalscorer is Pat Glover, netting 180 times between 1930 and 1939.
