League One History

League One was introduced for the 2004/05 campaign, where it was previously known for a short amount of time as the Football League Second Division. Prior to the Premier League, it was known as the Football League Third Division. As things stand, both Peterborough and Gillingham hold the record for the longest tenure in League One, staying in the third tier since 2013. There are currently six former Premier League sides competing in the division; Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers, Coventry City, Ipswich Town, Portsmouth and Sunderland.

Jordan Rhodes holds the record for most goals scored in a single League One campaign, netting 36 times for Huddersfield Town throughout the 2011/12 season. Millwall have been in more League One play-off finals than any other club, winning two of their four encounters.

At the start of the 2012/13 campaign, a Financial Fair Play arrangement was placed on all three divisions of the Football League with the intention of producing a division of financially self-sustaining clubs. However, Bury’s recent expulsion from the Football League demonstrated that it has not been as successful as many hoped.
