Leeds United History

The West-Yorkshire club were founded in 1919 following the disbanding of Leeds City and are commonly known as ‘The Whites’ or ‘The Peacocks’. Prior to Leeds United, their predecessor Leeds City were formed in 1904 and spent 15 years trying to attract fans to Elland Road. However, in 1919, they were forcibly disbanded and forced to sell all their players by The Football League in response to allegations of illegal payments to players during the First World War.

Leeds are an intriguing club packed with history. They have won three First Division titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup, two FA Community Shields and two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups. The club came ever-so close to lifting the European Cup back in 1975, narrowly losing 2-0 to Bayern Munich in the final at Parc des Princes, Paris.

Not only that, but they also came close to winning the European Cup’s successor, the Champions League. In 2001, Leeds reached the semi-finals of the competition but have failed to replicate any type of European success since. The majority of the club’s honours were achieved under Don Revie’s management during the 1960s and 1970s.

After 14 years in the top-flight of English football, Leeds were relegated from the Premier League in 2004 and have failed to return since. However, there is a growing belief in west Yorkshire that the club are getting closer to returning to the Premier League and it could be sooner rather than later.
