Leyton Orient History

Originally founded in 1881 as the Glyn Cricket Club, the club started to play football as Orient in 1888. In 1896, they adopted the name Clapton Orient and were elected into the Football League in 1907. Nicknamed ‘The O’s’, Orient play at Brisbane Road – also known as Matchroom Stadium – and have done since 1937. The club were promoted to the First Division in 1962 but suffered relegation the following year. However, they spent the 1970s in the second tier, winning two London Challenge Cups and reaching the semi-finals of the 1977/78 FA Cup, but were relegated in 1982 and again in 1985.

Orient gained promotion to the Third Division in 1989 but were relegated six years later and Barry Hearn became chairman after the club was put on sale for £5. However, in 2017 Nigel Travis took control and appointed the late Justin Edinburgh as manager, guided the club back into the Football League in 2019 while reaching the 2019 FA Trophy final.

The club’s widest margin of victory came on four separate occasions, winning 8-0 against Crystal Palace, Rochdale, Colchester United and Doncaster Rovers. Their highest attendance came back in 1929 when they played Tottenham Hotspur in the Second Division, attracting a record crowd of 38,219.
