Originally the club were founded as Millwall Rovers in 1885, but four years later that name was dropped and instead, they were known as Millwall Athletic. The club currently play at The Den, which holds up to 20,000 fans, but spent their time between 1910 and 2993 at the Old Den. Millwall are nicknamed ‘The Lions’ and the traditional club badge is a lion rampant to reflect exactly that.
Since 1920, Millwall have never dropped out of the Football League. During that period, the club have been promoted eleven times and relegated on nine occasions. The majority of their history has been spent floating between the second and third tiers of English football, but the Lions did have a short tenure in the First Division from 1998 to 1990, in which they achieved their highest ever league finish of tenth place.
In 2004, Millwall reached the final of the FA Cup but lost 3-0 to Manchester United. However, they consequently qualified for the UEFA Cup the following season, participating in European football for the first and only time in their history. The club have also won two League One play-off finals in 2010 and 2017 and were runners-up of the Football League Trophy in 1999.
Millwall’s most bitter and fierce rivalry comes with West Ham United and remains one of the most passionately contested derbies in the world. The rivalry between the two teams, specifically the clubs’ two hooligan firms, has been portrayed in several films, most notably Green Street.
