Founded in 1920, Morecambe are nicknamed ‘The Shrimps’ due to the coastal town’s local cuisine and have played their home matches at Globe Arena – a stadium with a capacity of over 6,400 – since moving from their original home, Christie Park, in 2010. The club was originally entered into the Lancashire Combination, where they participated for 48 years, winning the league title on five separate occasions. Morecambe then joined the Northern Premier League in 1968 and won the FA Trophy in 1974.
In 1992, the Shrimps lifted the Northern Premier League President’s Cup and under the stewardship of Jim Harvey, they achieved a second-place finish in the 1994/95 campaign and were promoted to the Conference.
Morecambe were beaten in the Conference play-off semi-finals on two separate occasions in 2003 and 2006, before they finally achieved promotion into the football league after beating Exeter City at Wembley in the 2007 play-off final. Since then, the club have stabilised and established themselves as a mid-table League Two outfit.
The club reached the third round of the FA Cup in the 1961/62 campaign for the first time in their history, but have failed to better that since.
