Newport County History

Founded in 1912, the club started off in the Southern League before being invited to become founder members of the Football League Third Division in 1920. They currently play their home matches at Rodney Parade, a stadium which holds over 7,800 fans and remember, you can gain exclusive access to Newport County news here in just a few, simple clicks.

In the 1938/39 campaign, the Exiles were crowned champions of the Third Division South, but World War II halted their progress of competing in the Second Division and had to wait until the 1946/47 season. However, that wait was not worthwhile as the club suffered relegation and in 1962, were delegated out of the Third Division.

In 1980, the club secured promotion out of the Fourth Division and won the Welsh up for the first time. The following year, they reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup, but financial difficulties followed and the double relegation out of the Football League meant the club went out of business in 1989.

Newport reformed four months later and in 2009/10, they were crowned champions of Conference South and after moving to Rodney Parade in 2012, the club returned to the Football League following a 25-year absence after winning the Conference play-off final in 2013.

Since then, Newport have established themselves as a regular Football League outfit and will be aiming towards the heights of League One.
