Nottingham Forest History

Founded in 1865, Forest have inherited a rich, unique history over 155 years with multiple accolades to go with it. Nicknamed ‘The Reds’ or ‘Tricky Trees’, the club play their home matches at the City Ground – and have done since 1898 – in front of over 30,000 spectators. Forest currently play their football in the Championship, but they have been successful in the top-flight of English football before. The club won their first and only First Division title in the 1977/78 campaign, while finishing runners up the following season. However, they have won the Second Division three times in their history, the most recent triumph back in 1997/98.

The 1970s and 1980s remains, by far, the most successful period in the club’s existence, guided by the management of Brian Clough and Peter Taylor. To go with Forest’s First Division title in that period, they won four League Cups, one FA Charity Shield, two European Cups and one UEFA Super Cup. Winning back-to-back European Cups – commonly known as the Champions League these days – in the 1978/79 and 1979/80 season is an impressive stint, highlighting just how large Forest are as a club.

Forest contest the Nottingham derby with Notts County. However, as Forest have often played in higher leagues than their rival, a meeting between the two clubs has been rare in recent history. Their last encounter was back in 2011 in the League Cup, drawing 3-3 and Forest winning on penalties.
