The club was founded in 1893 as Headington United before adopting its current name, Oxford United, in 1960. They then joined the Football League in 1962 and currently play their home matches at Kassam Stadium, which holds 12,500 fans. Between 1984 and 1985, Oxford earned successive promotions to the First Division and won the League Cup in 1986, beating Queens Park Rangers 3-0 in the Final. However, due to the UEFA ban on English clubs at the time, the club could not participate in European competition despite qualifying for it.

Relegation from the top flight in 1988 began an 18-year decline, falling as low as the Conference in 2006 and became the first winners of a major trophy to be relegated from the Football League. However, Oxford returned to League Two in 2010 via the play-offs and six seasons later they were promoted to League One after finishing second.

Ron Atkinson holds the club record for most appearances, featuring 560 times for Oxford. Ron’s late brother, Graham Atkinson, tops the all-time goalscoring charts with 107. The club’s largest victory was beating Barrow 7-0 in Division Four.
