Founded as a club 121 years ago in 1898, Fratton Park has remained their home since the very start with a capacity of 20,000. Pompey have won the First Division twice in their history, achieving back-to-back titles in the 1948/49 and 1949/50 campaigns. The club have also won the Second Division once, Third Division three times and League Two once. In cup competitions, Portsmouth have endured some success, winning the FA Cup twice while finishing runners up on three occasions.
Their triumph in the 2008 FA Cup final over Cardiff placed them in European Competition – the UEFA Cup (Europa League) – for the first time in the club’s history. Portsmouth spent seven consecutive seasons in the Premier League from 2003-10, but their fortunes declines over the next few years when they entered administration twice and were relegated three times, reaching the fourth tier and their lowest point since 1980. However, they were saved from liquidation after being bought out by the fan-owned Pompey Supporters Trust.
Portsmouth’s largest victory came back in 1927, defeating Notts County 9-1 in Division 2. Jimmy Dickinson has the most appearances for the club (834) while Peter Harris is Pompey’s all-time leading top goalscorer, netting 211 times. Peter Crouch remains their transfer record signing, arriving from Liverpool for £11 million in 2008.
