Starting off as a cricket club, Preston have been based at their home ground, Deepdale Stadium, since 1875. In 1878 the club took up football as a winter fitness activity, but then decided to focus on it and officially founded as a football club in 1880. Nicknamed ‘The Lilywhites’, the club was a founder member of the Football League back in 1888. In the 1888/89 season, Preston won both the inaugural league championship and FA Cup, the latter without conceding a single goal. They were the first team to ever complete the ‘Double’ in English football and are remembered as ‘The Invincibles’.

In 1889/90, Preston won the league again, but success has been hard to come by since and their only major trophy following that has been their 1938 FA Cup final victory against Huddersfield Town. As for famous players, Tom Finney and Bill Shankly remain the most prestigious, both of whom have stands at Deepdale named after them.

The Lilywhites have won the Second Division three times, Third Division twice and Fourth Division once in their history. Finney remains the club’s top goalscorer – netting 210 times from 473 appearances – while Preston’s widest margin of victory came back in 1887, defeating Hyde a staggering 26-0 in the FA Cup.
