Reading FC History

Founded in 1871, Reading are one of the oldest teams in England. The club are nicknamed ‘The Royals’ but were previously known as ‘The Biscuitmen’ due to the town’s association with Huntley and Palmers, a British firm of biscuit makers. Reading played at Elm Park for 102 years between 1896 and 1998, before moving into the Madejski Stadium – holding over 24,000 spectators – and you can find all the exclusive Reading news here in just a few, simple clicks.

The club holds the record for the number of successive league wins at the start of a season, winning 13 games at the start of the 1985/85 Third Division campaign. They also hold the record for number of points gained in one season, racking up 106 points in the 2005/06 Championship campaign. The following season, Reading finished eight in their first ever season as a top-flight club.

The furthest the Royals have reached in the FA Cup is the semi-finals, doing so on two previous occasions in 1927 and 2015. As for the League Cup, they have reached the quarter-finals twice in their history. They have won the Championship twice, Third Division thrice and Fourth Division once.

Reading’s biggest win came back in 1946, defeating Crystal Palace 10-2 in the Third Division South. Martin Hicks holds the record for most appearances (603), while Trevor Senior remains the club’s top goalscorer, netting 191 times in two spells with the club.
