Founded in 1907, Rochdale moved to its current home ground, Spotland Stadium, in 1920 and was admitted into the Football League one year later. They are nicknamed ‘The Dale’ and their greatest achievement was reaching the League Cup final back in 1961/62 but succumbed to defeat against Norwich City. Between 1974 and 2010, Rochdale played 36 consecutive seasons in the bottom division, the longest period any team has spent in the fourth tier in history.
Throughout their period of existence, the club has been endured three promotions and three relegations, all of which continuously bounced them back and forth between the third and fourth tiers. Their most recent promotion came back in 2014 after finishing third in League Two and they have remained in League One ever since.
Rochdale’s widest margin of victory in a league match came all the way back in 1926, defeating Chesterfield 8-1. Gary Jones holds the record for most league appearances after featuring 464 times for the club, while Reg Jenkins is the club’s all-time league top goalscorer, netting 119 times for the Dale.
