Founded in 1925 as a merger between Rotherham County and Rotherham Town, the club’s colours were originally yellow and black before evolving into the more traditional red and white. Nicknamed ‘The Millers’, Rotherham joined the Football League in 1925 and spent the first 25 years of their time in Division Three North – the lowest level of the Football League. They featured in the inaugural League Cup final in 1961, losing to Aston Villa 3-2 on aggregate. The club won the 1996 Football League Trophy and 1946 Football League North Cup.

Two separate back-to-back promotions have been achieved in their history between 1999-2001 and 2012-2014. Their greatest FA Cup success has been reaching the fifth round on two occasions.

Rotherham’s highest league finish was achieved in the 1954/55 campaign, finishing third in the Football League Second Division. The club’s largest league victory came back in 1947, beating Oldham Athletic 8-0 in the Division Three North. Danny Williams holds the record for most appearances, featuring 621 times for the club.
