Salford City History

Founded in 1940 as Salford Central, the club played in minor local league football until joining the Manchester League in 1963. In 1989, they renamed as Salford City and currently play their home matches at Moor Lane – which is known as the Peninsula Stadium for sponsorship purposes – and has a capacity of 5,106. Nicknamed ‘The Ammies’ or ‘The Lions’, Salford won the Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1973, 1975 and 19777 and the Manchester Premier Cup in 1978 and 1979. It took them until the 2007/08 campaign to gain promotion to the Northern Premier League, but recent history has pushed the club much higher up.

In 2014, the club was taken over by former Manchester United players Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, while David Beckham recently purchased a 10% share himself in 2019. In 2014/15, Salford won the Northern Premier League Division One North title, before going on to secure promotion to the National League North via the 2016 Premier Division play-off final.

After one season in the National League North, they secured the title in 2017/18 before leaping into the Football League for the first time in the club’s history after winning the 2019 National League play-off final.
