The club was formed in 1877 as an offshoot of The Wednesday Cricket Club and were known as Wednesday Football Club, until changing to their current name in 1929. Nicknamed ‘The Owls’, Wednesday are one of the oldest football clubs in the world – winning the 1868 Cromwell Cup, only the second tournament of its kind. And don’t forget, you can keep up to do date with all the latest Sheffield Wednesday news here.
Wednesday were founding members and inaugural champions of the Football Alliance in 1889, before joining The Football League just three years later. They were also a founder of the Premier League in 1992 and the club have spent most of its history in the top flight of English football despite not having played at that level since being relegated in 2000.
The Owls have a rich history behind them. They have won four First Division titles and five Second Division titles, while their domestic cup performances have also been impressive. The first of their FA Cup triumphs came back in 1896, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers, and they won it twice after that in 1907 and 1935.
As for the League Cup, they have also lifted that trophy back in 1991, beating Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley – Nigel Pearson awarded Man of the Match on the day. In European competition, Wednesday have feature four times, reaching the quarter-finals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup back in 1963.
The club’s biggest victory came back in 1891, beating Halliwell 12-0 in the FA Cup first round.
