Shrewsbury Town History

The club was formed in 1886 and first joined the Football League in 1950. Since then, the Shrews have competed in each of the lower three tiers of English football, in addition to one campaign spent in the Conference throughout 2003/04. Shrewsbury earned their first promotion back in 1958/59, leaping up to the Third Division and remained there for 15 years before slipping back down again. During the 1960/61 campaign, the Shrews reached the semi-finals of the League Cup, narrowly losing 4-3 to Rotherham United on aggregate.

The 1978/79 season was a memorable one. The club were crowned Third Division champions and over 14,000 fans packed Gay Meadow to see them seal promotion with a 4-1 win over Exeter City. They also had their first ever run to the FA Cup quarter-finals that season, before crashing out to Wolverhampton Wanderers in a replay.

Shrewsbury’s widest margin of victory came against Mold Ayn Stars in the Welsh FA Cup first round back in 1894, recording a staggering 21-0 win. Mickey Brown holds the record for league appearances, racking up 418 in three spells with the club.
