Southampton FC History

Founded in 1885 as St. Mary’s Church of England Young Men’s Association, the club are nicknamed ‘The Saints’ due to its history as a church football team. Nine years later, they adopted the name Southampton St Mary’s when the club joined the Southern League in 1894, and two years later, they were renamed Southampton after winning the Southern League title. It wasn’t until 1920 that Southampton joined the Football League, starting off in the Third Division following World War 1. Their home, St. Mary’s Stadium, has been that since 2001 with a capacity of 32,000. Back in 1940, Southampton were briefly forced to play their home matches at Fratton Park – home of their long-standing rivals Portsmouth – due to a bomb landing on The Dell pitch, which left an 18-foot crater which damaged an underground culvert and flooded the pitch.

As for honours, the Saints have won the FA Cup on one occasion – the 1975/75 season – but have never won the League Cup, recently finishing runners up in 2017 courtesy of Manchester United’s triumph. The club have won the Third Division once and won the Football League Trophy back in 2010.

The club’s biggest home wins came back in 1901 and 1902 – an 11-0 victory against Northampton Town followed by an 11-0 win against Watford one year later.
