Stoke City History

Originally founded in the 1860s as Stoke Rambles, the club was renamed to Stoke in 1878 before evolving into Stoke City in 1925 after Stoke-on-Trent was granted city status. Stoke remain one of just 12 founding members of the Football League in 1888. Their previous home was Victoria Ground where they stayed from 1878 to 1997 before moving into the Britannia Stadium – now known as bet365 Stadium – and you can find all the recent Stoke City news right here.

The club are nicknamed ‘The Potters’, which sparked after the pottery industry in Stoke-on-Trent and they contest the ‘Potteries derby’ with Port Vale while Stoke’s traditional rivals are West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

As for honours, Stoke have just one major trophy to date, which was achieved after beating Chelsea 2-1 in the 1972 League Cup final. The club’s highest league finishes came in the 1935/36 and 1946/47 campaigns, achieving a fourth-place finish in the top flight on both occasions.

The Potters have reached the FA Cup final on one occasion, finishing runners-up to Manchester City in 2011. They have also won the Second Division twice and the Third Division once.

John McCue holds the record for most appearances (675), while John Ritchie tops the goalscoring charts with 176 goals.
