Nicknamed ‘The Black Cats’, Sunderland were founded in 1879. They currently play their home matches at the Stadium of Light having moved from Roker Park in 1997, which holds up to 49,000 spectators. It’s probably not common knowledge to most, but Sunderland have won the First Division six times in their history – the last time coming in the 1935/36 campaign – a record that has only been bettered by five other clubs. In more recent times, they have won the Second Division/Championship five times along with one Third Division title. The club have never won the League Cup but do have two FA Cup triumphs to their name – coming in 1937 and 1973 – along with one FA Charity Shield.

The Black Cats have a long-standing rivalry with Newcastle United; contesting regularly over the years in the Tyne-Wear derby, stretching back to 1898. Their biggest win in their history came against their fierce rivals in the First Division in 1908; a 9-1 win would certainly have pleased the fans.

Jimmy Montgomery holds the record for most league appearances for the club, playing 527 matches between 1961 and 1976. As for the record top goalscorer, that achievement goes to Bobby Gurney who netted 228 times in 13 years with the club.
