Swansea City History

The club was originally founded in 1912 as Swansea Town and joined the Football League nine years later. However, they decided to change their name in 1969 to Swansea City to reflect Swansea’s new status as a city. Nicknamed ‘The Swans’, the club’s first trophy was the Welsh Cup, achieved back in 1913, and is an accomplishment they went on to achieve another nine times. Their first league triumph came when they won the 1924/25 Third Division South title. Swansea also have two Football League Trophy triumphs to their name, the most recent in the 2005/05 campaign.

More impressively, though, the club have won the League cup – their first and only major honour to date – becoming the first Welsh team to do so. A 5-0 victory over Bradford City in the 2013 League Cup Final meant the Swans qualified for the 2013/14 Europa League where they went onto reach the last 32 before suffering defeat to Napoli over two legs.

Wilfred Milne holds the record for most Swansea appearances, featuring in 586 matches between 1920 and 1937. As for the goalscoring records, Ivor Allchurch tops the charts after netting 166 times in two spells with the club. The club’s widest victory margin was 12-0, achieved back in 1982 against Sliema in the European Cup Winners Cup – a competition the Swans have qualified for seven times in their history.
