Founded over 141 years ago in 1879, they originated as Swindon AFC before changing their name to Spartans the following year, before finally settling on Swindon Town and 1883. The club turned professional in 1894 as a founder member of the Southern League. They won the Western League title in 1898/99, 1910/11 and 1913/14 before they were elected to the Football League in 1920. They stayed in the third tier for 43 years, finally securing promotion into the Second Division in 1963.
In 1969, the club produced a moment to remember in history, beating Arsenal in the League Cup final and then secured promotion at the end of the 1968/69 campaign. They won the Fourth Division in 1985/86 and went onto win the 1990 Second Division play-off final, but were denied promotion after admitting to breach Football League regulations.
Glenn Hoddle coached the team to victory in the 1993 play-off final to secure a spot in the top-flight for the first time in the club’s history, but were relegated out of the Premier League the following season. In 2012, they came runners-up in the Football League Trophy.
