Tranmere Rovers History

The club were originally founded in 1884 as Belmont Football Club before adopting their current name, Tranmere Rovers, just one year later. They were a founder member of Division Three North in 1921 and play their home matches at Prenton Park, which holds over 16,000 fans. During the 1980s, Tranmere were beset of financial problems and went into administration in 1987. However, this turned out to be the turning point to their most successful period in their history. Under manager John King, the team reached the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League in three successive seasons.

The club experienced a number of cup runs in the early 2000s and reached the League Cup final in 2000, eventually losing out to Leicester City. They also reached the FA Cup quarter-finals on three occasions in 2000, 2001 and 2004. The Whites recently beat Boreham Wood in the 2017/18 National League play-off final; they went down to 10-men after three minutes but emerged as 2-1 winners and returned to the Football League.

Tranmere’s highest league finish was when they placed fourth in the 1992/93 First Division campaign. Ray Mathias holds the record for most appearances, featuring 637 times for the club. Meanwhile, Ian Muir tops the goalscoring charts of all-time, netting 180 goals for the Whites.
