Founded in 1888 as Walsall Town Shifts following the amalgamation of Walsall Town and Walsall Swifts, the club currently play their home matches at Bescot Stadium and have done since 1990. They were founder members of the Football League Second Division in 1892 and then went on to spend 37 years in the Third Division North. Walsall then became founder members of the Fourth Division and won the title in 1956/60.
After promotion in 1998/99, the Saddlers spent four of the next five seasons in the second tier of English football. However, two relegations dropped the club to League Two by 2006, but immediately were promoted as 2006/07 League Two champions. Their first match at Wembley Stadium came in 2015 Football League Trophy Final, losing out to Bristol City, and their 11-year stay in League One ended with relegation in 2019.
Walsall’s widest margin of victory came against Darwen, beating them 10-0 in the Second Division in 1899. Jimmy Walker holds the most appearances with 534, while Gilbert Alsop remains the club’s all-time top goalscorer, netting 226 times in two spells with the Saddlers.
