Watford FC History

In 1881, the foundation of the club started aligned with Watford Rovers and was officially established as Watford Football Club in 1898. Nicknamed ‘The Hornets’, the club did not join the Football League until 1920 and moved to their home, Vicarage Road, two years later. Remember, all the latest Watford news can be found right here.

Graham Taylor remains one of Watford’s greatest ever managers, a tenure which saw his Watford side rise from the Fourth to the First Division between 1977 and 1987. Also in that period, the Hornets finished second in the First Division in the 1982/83 season, competed in the UEFA Cup the following campaign and reached the 1984 FA Cup Final.

Coinciding with Taylor’s first appointment was the introduction of Elton John as club chairman back in 1976. The lifelong Hornets fan declared his ambition to take the team into the First Division and did exactly that.

However, Taylor’s departure was the start of Watford’s decline, before the former manager returned to Hertfordshire in 1997 and led the team to successive promotions from the renamed Second Division to the Premier League for one season in 1999/2000.

In the club’s 122-year history, they have never managed to win an FA or League Cup. They did finish runners-up of the 2018/19 FA Cup Final, though – a 6-0 defeat to Manchester City wasn’t the magic the supporters were hoping for.

Luther Blissett holds the record for most Watford appearances, playing 503 matches over a 16-year period. Blissett also holds the record for most goals scored, netting 186 times for the Hornets.
