Nicknamed ‘Hammers’ or ‘Irons’, the club were founded in 1895 as Thames Ironworks, but five years later were reformed as West Ham United. West Ham were the first team – along with Bolton Wanderers – to feature in an FA Cup final held at Wembley but ended up on the losing side. In 1940, the Hammers triumphed in the inaugural Football League War Cup; a competition that was aimed to fill the hole left in English football by the cancellation of the FA Cup during the Second World War.
During the 1966 World Cup final, West Ham three players participate; captain Bobby Moore and goalscorers Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters – all of whom contributed massively to England’s first and only ever World Cup success.
When it comes to honours, the Hammers’ last major success came in the 1980 FA Cup final – beating Arsenal 1-0 – and the club have won the trophy on two other previous occasions. However, West Ham have never won a First Division/Premier League, while only finishing as runners-up on both League Cup final appearances.
Their latest success came by way of a Championship Play-Off Final, defeating Blackpool 2-1 courtesy of an 87th minute winner from Ricardo Vaz Te. They were also Championship Play-Off winners back in 2005 after beating Preston North End 1-0.
On the European Stage, West Ham did triumph in the 1964/65 European Cup Winners Cup, while finishing runners-up of the competition 11 years later. The Hammers also won the UEFA Intertoto Cup back in 1999.
