Wigan Athletic History

Founded in 1932 and nicknamed ‘The Latics’, Wigan have played at the DW Stadium since 1999, previously located at Springfield Park. When talking about accolades, Wigan’s fairly recent triumph over Manchester City in the 2013 FA Cup Final comes to mind. However, that came at the cost of being relegated to the Championship, and the club have never made it back to the top-flight since. The club also reached the 2006 League Cup Final but fell short, losing 4-0 to Manchester United.

Not only that, but Wigan are three-time champions of League One – coming in 2003, 2006 and 2018 – and twice winners of the EFL Trophy. Following their 2013 FA Cup triumph, the Latics made their European debut in the 2013/14 Europa League.

Prior to this, Wigan spent the period between 1932 and 1979 playing non-league football. Overall, the club’s biggest league victory came in 2017 after beating Oxford United 7-0. Kevin Langley has made the most league appearances for the Latics, appearing 317 times in two spells for the club.
