Wolves History

Originally the club was founded in 1877 as St Luke’s F.C, but two years later merged with the football section of a local cricket club called Blakenhall Wanderers to form Wolverhampton Wanderers. Molineux Stadium has been the home of the West-Midlands club since 1889 – holding 32,000 fans – and was one of the first British grounds to have floodlights installed. Nicknamed ‘Wolves’, the club qualified to compete for the 2019/20 Europa League; the first time they have qualified for a European tournament for 39 years. The season prior they were promoted to the Premier League as champions of the 2017/18 Championship campaign.

Search deeper and Wolves have plentiful history. The club are four-time winners of the FA Cup – their last triumph dating back to 1960 – and have also finished runners-up on four occasions. They also have four FA Charity Shields to their name and came runners-up in the 1971/72 UEFA Cup, losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the two-legged final.

However, between 1980 and 1990, the club experienced a near-financial ruin. The multi-million pound rebuilding of the Molineux Street Stand in 1979 did not help the financial stability of the club and they came close to liquidation, but were saved last minute when purchased by a consortium fronted by former player Derek Dougan.
